More Hip-Hop.

I just went to a show on New Years, from 4-7pm, in a tiny hat shop in the U-District of Seattle- and it was incredible. And my favorite performer was probably the up-and-coming Seattle artist Macklemore. Check out what he has to say about hip-hop.

This is a song from his first album:

And this is a live video from the show I went to. I was RIGHT in front, actually underneath the guy who was filming this. BOMB.

PS

I was watching an episode of True Blood (it's a little bit of a guilty pleasure) the other day and one of the characters said something (I don't have the exact quote) like: "School is for white people. I prefer reading."

We've chatted a little bit about this before, but what do you all think about talking about the necessity of formal education? Not as a means to a better career, but as a way to form well-rounded, informed individuals. Is formal education a product of white upper class society? Has anyone experienced an education that reinforces a dominant culture? Is it possible to get an academic education without going to school?

Just a thought...
I'm slightly torn...

I'm all for watching something (the Wire would be great). Given that it *is* the last day of instruction and we're about to go into finals, I'm sure a mental break would be nice for all involved.

However, I'd also be interested in hearing about any inspiration that came from this class...maybe have a "Now what?" conversation.

I'm with Dolores, about the food. I am currently a very penniless individual, myself. So, as much as I am pro-food, I have neither the funds, nor the time to make a contribution.

See you all tomorrow!

Last Class

I vote yes for food- Not everyone has to bring something, but those of us who would like to, will. No pressure. Yes?

As for an idea that's really stuck with me this semester... I've definitely been affected by the idea of education as liberation and the importance of crisis in relation to learning. I'm totally fascinated.

I would also like to wrap up by talking about what we did for our group projects, what worked and what didn't... compare pedagogies... and maybe do a little analysis or talk about the pedagogy used the entire semester by Jelly? We haven't done much of that.

I'm down for anything, really... Sad to see the end of this class.
Thanks for the blog, Drea and Mary Beth and Jake!

Last Class

Hey learners of teachings and teachers of learning. I would love to watch the Wire as well but for selfish reasons. I don't know if most people would like to stay for the full three hours or if that's even a negotiable topic. I was thinking we could have a discussion about how our views on learning and teaching have changed. We could talk about how our teaching experience compared to learning about teaching, what we thought was collectively the most effective or ineffective, and maybe our different preparations and frustrations, struggles and considerations. I think our different 'group' project experiences might be interesting to compare. Um, food is bomb! Let's make it happen if we can but not freak out if it doesn't. Maybe since we all have evals due we could discuss how the materials from this class may help us evaluate ourselves as learners or our classes and teachers more in depth. P.S. Kelly you were in my dream cause a bunch of us tagged your name on the wall outside Brockton. Weird. we could just talk about that. Happy Chanukah!

Last Clast

whatever the content of the class, food sounds like something we need. but i'm a frustrated, poor little girl without the funds or means to provide food. it is also finals week and everyone is super busy. maybe food won't happen...
since it is our last class meeting, it makes sense to review everything we did this semester. I agree with maya that some sort of reflection of pedagogy in johnston or other institutions would be a nice wrap-up. the wire is also nice, but i say that only because i want to watch it again, not because it would wrap-up the semester.
i guess i am saying that i have no idea what i want the last class to be. it's finals week and i'm not in the place to think about the past.
